Reactivity:  This test system reacted with all SMV isolates or strains tested. Reaction of the ELISA is moderately strong.  Optical Density at 405_nm  is in a range of 0.650 - >3.000 depending  on the virus titer in the samples tested.

Sensitivity:  Sensitivity of the ELISA is very high.  The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant leaf tissues diluted at 1:810 - 1:2430. This test can be used to detect SMV in seeds.

Specificity:  There is no cross reaction with healthy soybean tissues.  Background is low on all of the negative control wells.

Application:  The test can be used to detect SMV in infected plan tissues and seeds.

Name:  Soybean Mosaic Virus

Vector:  Aphids,  over 30 different species.
Transmission:  Mechanical, seed.
Main host plants:  Bean, soybean.

Viral Particle:  Filamentous particle, containing RNA genome.
Virus Infection:  Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) infects soybean and causes mosaic and crinkle diseases. Symptoms of SMV on an infected soybean plant include chlorosis of leaves, stunted growth, and crinkled leaves. SMV can be transmitted by soybean seed, as well as by mechanical contact among plants. Infected plants produce smaller seeds with yield reductions of up to 90 percent.  Viral infection also reduces oil content and  mottling of the seed coat, and therefore reduce commercial value of the soybean in the market.
