Reactivity:  This test system reacted with all of the isolates of PRSV tested.  Reaction of the ELISA is very strong.  Optical Density at 405_nm is in arrange of 1.200 - >3.000 depending on the virus titer in the samples tested.

Sensitivity:  Sensitivity of the ELISA is very high.  The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant tissues diluted at 1:2430.

Specificity:  There is no cross reaction found with healthy  plant tissues.  Background is very low on all of the negative control wells.

Application:  The test can be used to detect PRSV in infected host plants.

Name:  Papaya Ringspot Virus
Acronym:  PRSV
Synonyms:  Watermelon mosaic virus 1, specific watermelon mosaic virus.

Vector:  Aphids,  in non-persistent manner.
Transmission:  Mechanical
Main host plants:  Papaya, cucurbits.

Virus Particle:  Filamentous particles, containing RNA genome.
Virus Infection:  Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) infects papaya plants which show ring symptoms on fruit and distortion of leaves.  PRSV also occurs in cucurbit plants, and causes leaf mottling and distortion leaves and/or fruits. The virus is transmitted by aphids, and through mechanical contact among the plant tissues.   There is some report about seed transmission of PRSV.
