Source Antibody:  A rabbit polyclonal antibody for capture and a mixture of three monoclonal antibodies for detection.

Reactivity:  This test system reacted with all BNYVV isolates tested. Reaction of the ELISA is very strong.  Optical Density at 405nm  is in a range of 1.480 - >3.000 depending  on the virus titer in the samples tested.

Sensitivity:  Sensitivity of the ELISA is very high.  The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant leaf tissues diluted  at 1:2430.

Specificity:  There is no cross reaction with healthy beet plant tissues.  Background is very low on all of the negative control wells.

Application:  The test can be used to detect BNYVV in infected beet plant tissues including roots, stems and leaves.

Main host plants:  Beet, spinach.

Viral Particle: Long, fragile, rod shaped particles.  Viral genome contains four single stranded RNAs.
Virus Infection:  The beet necrotic yellow vein virus (BNYVV) causes one of the most economically destructive beet diseases, rhizomania.  Common symptoms of rhizomania include yellowing, chlorosis, necrotic vein yellowing, crinkling, wilting and stunting.  BNYVV also infects spinach causing yellow mottle and stunting.  Virus  is transmitted by the fungus Polymyxa betae as well as plant sap.
