Source Antibody: Rabbit polyclonal antibody for both capture and
detection.
Test Format: DAS ELISA
Reactivity: The test reacted with all MCDV isolates tested. Reaction of the ELISA is moderate strong. Optical Density at 405nm is in arrange of 0.600 - >2.600 depending on the virus titer in the samples tested.
Sensitivity: Sensitivity of the ELISA is moderate high. The virus can be consistently detected in infected plant tissues diluted at 1:810.
Specificity: There is no cross reaction with healthy plant tissues such as corn or other host plants. Background is low on all of the negative control wells.
Application: The test can be used to detect MCDV in infected host plants.

Information About the Virus
Name: Maize Chlorotic Dwarf Virus
Acronym: MCDV
Synonyms: Ohio corn stunt agent
Group/Genus: Waikavirus
Vector: Transmitted by a vector; an insect; Graminella nigrifrons
most important, but also Graminella sonora and Exitianus exitiosus;
Cicadellidae. Transmitted in a semi-persistent manner. Virus lost by the vector
when it moults; does not multiply in the vector; not transmitted congenitally to
the progeny of the vector.
Transmission: Virus is not transmitted by mechanical inoculation;
not transmitted by contact between plants; not transmitted by seed; not
transmitted by pollen.
Main natural host plants: Zea mays, Sorghum halepense.
Virus Infection: Symptoms include stunting, reddening and yellowing,
tertiary vein banding, mild vein clearing. Symptoms persist.
Diagnostically susceptible host species and symptoms: Digitaria
sanguinalis, Panicum miliaceum, Pennisetum glaucum, Sorghum vulgare
var. sudanense - symptoms mild or absent; Setaria faberi,
S. lutescens; Sorghum bicolor, S. halepense - mild vein clearing;
Triticum aestivum - symptomless; Zea mays - stunting, yellowing and
reddening, tertiary vein banding.
Geographical distribution: Spreads in the USA (the south).
